Health Benefits of Drinking Alcohol

The benefits of alcohol consumption have long been known. The Bible refers to alcohol's medicinal properties no less than 191 times. Alcohol is beneficial in controlling the following conditions: hypertension or high blood pressure, peripheral artery disease, angina pectoris, liver disease, hepatitis A, pancreatic cancer, duodenal ulcer, gallstones, kidney stones, digestive ailments, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoporosis, bone fractures, hearing loss, macular degeneration, poor cognition and memory, Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, stress and depression, and erectile dysfunction.

Even more significantly, innumerable studies have proven beyond any doubt that alcohol consumption leads to a decrease in the rate of heart attacks and strokes. The results of studies conducted on hundreds of thousands of men and women from several countries and continents have consistently shown that alcohol consumption reduces death from heart disease and a host of other ailments.

Huh?!! So why does alcohol consumption keep getting such bad press?

Health Benefits of Drinking Alcohol

Well, it's not the alcohol that's to blame, but the consumer of it. For these beneficial effects to take effect, the key is for the alcohol to be taken in MODERATE doses.

Ahhh!! There's the rub.

Alcohol consumption has wondrous effects if, and only if, the consumption is MODERATE. Listen to just a minuscule portion of the findings.

* The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) reports that moderate drinkers have the greatest longevity. Moderate drinking results in a sharp decrease in heart disease risk (40%-60%). (This is a pretty major effect considering that cardiovascular disease is the number one killer in the United States, responsible for one million deaths in America each year.)

* A study of 12,000 male physicians done in the U.K. over a 13-year period found that moderate drinkers had the lowest risk of death from ALL causes.

* The Italians did a study of 1,536 men aged 45 to 65. The study found that the moderate drinkers among them gained about 2 years of life compared to occasional and heavy drinkers.

* China also did a large-scale study of middle aged men. It too found that those who drank moderately had a nearly 20% lower mortality rate compared to men who abstained from drink.

The studies are not confined to male subjects. Alcohol does not discriminate between the sexes.

* The Harvard Nurses study of over 85,000 women reported reduced mortality among the moderate drinkers.

* Harvard researchers did a study of over 5,000 women with type 2 diabetes. The moderate drinkers among them had significantly lower heart disease rates than those who didn't drink. In fact, the women who drank about half a glass of alcohol a day reduced their risk from coronary heart disease by more than half.

And the list goes on. The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism did an extensive review of recent research from over 20 countries and the findings were quite consistent. Moderate drinkers live longer than those who either abstain from alcohol or who drink heavily. This is largely due to a decrease in diseases such as coronary heart disease, respiratory disease, and cancer. Moderate drinkers enjoy better health than abstainers or heavy drinkers. It's been found that abstainers have double the risk of stroke as moderate drinkers.

Okay. So what's considered moderate drinking?

Different countries have different standards. But generally, for non-pregnant women, it's one to two drinks a day, for men it's two to three drinks.

Now, what constitutes a drink?

A medium glass of wine, a can of beer or a .5 ounce shot of whiskey or other spirit generally have the same amount of pure alcohol in them and would be considered as a drink or one alcoholic unit.

Many of the beneficial effects of moderate drinking reverse if a person drinks too much. The amount is a key factor but so is consistency and regularity. Five drinks in one night do not equal - and produce a totally opposite effect from - five drinks spread out over five nights.

So take heed. Moderation and consistency are key to getting the health benefits that alcohol offers.

Make Your Restaurant Boom - Organizational Tips For a Successful Business

According to the most recent food expenditure data from the United States Department of Agriculture's Economic Research Service, spending on food and alcohol in restaurants across the nation was approximately 5 million in 2008. With spending like this, it is no surprise people who possess an entrepreneurial spirit often desire to own and operate a restaurant in order to reap the benefits of not only food but also beer, wine, and liquor consumption. However, before profits can flow, there are various factors the new restaurant owner must consider to make the watering hole a success.

"Americans enjoy eating out, and the pace of development of the modern lifestyle indicates that they will continue to eat out more in the future," said Douglas Brown, author of the best-selling The Restaurant Manager's Handbook. "...Four out of five consumers agree that going out to a restaurant is a better way to use their leisure time than cooking and cleaning up."

One of the most important tasks to prep your restaurant for success is to survey the existing bar environment where your business is located.

Make Your Restaurant Boom - Organizational Tips For a Successful Business

According to Valerie Mellema, professional bartender and author of The Professional Bartender's Handbook, an effective way to research location must-haves for your restaurant is to talk with others in the area to find out about their typical clientele and what types of food and alcohol are popular. For example, in Florida, Land Shark beer is a local favorite, but in Pennsylvania, Yuengling is a staple of any flourishing establishment.

"If certain types of beer are popular, be sure to offer these beers by the bottle and on draft," Mellema said. "For a large after-work martini crowd, stock the bar with a variety of vodkas and gins, along with the usual liquors."

Creating something to be accommodating, comfortable, and entertaining is one of the initial steps of any successful bar or restaurant business - a well-organized establishment with visible stock will not only attract guests, but will also make the ordering process flow. Optimal bar organization can be achieved through the following steps:

1. Install proper refrigeration. Refrigeration is essential for a bar because many drinks require refrigerated mixers, garnishes, and even eggs.

2. Furnish your bar with an appropriate amount of cabinets and sinks. Cabinets should be easily accessible and should contain alcohol and extra necessities, like straws and napkins. Cleaning supplies are essential and there should also be a hand washing sink, a triple sink setup, and an all-purpose sink.

3. Keep a variety of drink-specific glasses in stock. Most guests will be impressed if specialized glasses are used. Various glass types included wine glasses, pints, beer mugs, highballs, cocktail glasses, martini, and rocks glasses. Back-ups of glassware should also be stored somewhere easily accessible.

4. Set up an accommodating bar top. Bar mats for jiggers and mixing glasses, as well as holders for napkins and straws, are essential. Bartenders will appreciate a mixing area with a grate and drain so the excess liquor and mixers will easily drain.

5. Supply necessary liquors. These include: Brandy, Cognac, Gin, Light Rum, Anejo Rum, Blended Scotch, Whiskey (Blended or Irish), Canadian Whiskey, White Tequila, Gold Tequila,,Vodka, Citrus Vodka, Bourbon.

6. Include a variety of cordials. Cordials can be used as mixers, after dinner drinks, or as floaters. Popular cordials include, Amaretto, Contra or Triple Sec, Crème de Cassis, Grand Marnier, Crème de Cacao (White & Dark), Kahlua, Sambuca (White), Crème de Menthe (White & Green), Bailey's Irish Cream, B & B, Curacao (White & Blue), Chambord, Frangelico, Schnapps (Peach & Peppermint), Tuaca, Melon Liqueur, Southern Comfort, Tia Maria.

7. Include wells in bar construction. Wells, which allow frequently used liquors and liqueurs to be easily accessed, are a necessity in public bars.

8. Include a plethora of beers. Make sure to have different types of beer like lagers, ales, porters, and stouts available in draft and bottles.

9. Make beer kegs and taps easily accessible for staff. Beer taps should be located in an area that allows bartenders to easily access the kegs. Kegs are very heavy, but the staff should be able to change them out on their own. Once empty, kegs can usually be returned to the vendor for refilling.

10. Be knowledgeable about storing wine. Reds should not be stored

in the refrigerator, nor should they be stored in an area that will expose them to light. White wine should be stored in a temperature-controlled refrigerator. Necessary wines include: Red Wine, Blush Wine, Sherry (Cream & Dry), Port (Tawny & Ruby), Vermouth (Sweet & Dry), Rose Wine.

11. Use popular brand names when setting up a bar. Guests will request specific liquors and will be impressed if they are available. To make ordering easy, determine how much of each different type of liquor is sold. These numbers are used so there is not an excess of inventory and everything will be fresh. Always keep at least one back-up bottle of every liquor.

12. Stock up on required mixers, garnishes and other Necessities: Cocktails should have the appropriate mixers and garnishes. Most guests look forward to eating the olives in their martinis or the cherries in their Amaretto Sours. Examples of garnish necessities include Ginger Ale, Grenadine, various types of juice, lemon-lime soda, lime and lemon wedges, pineapple, cocktail onions, fresh mint, Old Bay seasoning, salt and pepper, sugar, whipped cream.

13. Determine the tools and equipment needed to run a bar. There are various tools necessary in a bar. Some tools are necessary for making specific types of drinks, while others are used in many different drink recipes. Examples include a long bar spoon, a covered cocktail shaker, wine keys, muddlers for making drinks like a mojito, and jiggers for measuring out cocktails.

14. Create an inviting atmosphere. Having a bar setup that guests will enjoy is important. Many small bars do not look like much, but the servers and bartenders are friendly, therefore, the atmosphere and the staff of a bar will essentially make it or break it. Effective ways to create a fun atmosphere include plenty of bar top space, televisions, and jukeboxes, as well as games like darts or pool.

Cognac Glasses - Do They Really Enhance the Drinking Experience?

There are many different types of brandy and cognac glasses and available to purchase. But does the shape of a glass really do anything to improve the tasting sensation when you actually sip your cognac? Or is it just a ploy by clever marketers to encourage us to spend our hard earned cash?

Well, depending on how you drink your cognac, then yes - there certainly is a reason as to the choice of glass that's best suited for your drink. Of course, if you're enjoying a cognac cocktail then it's likely to be served in a long glass or perhaps a martini glass. But for those who like to sip their cognac pure and unadulterated, or perhaps on the rocks, then using the right type of glass will certainly enhance the taste experience.

The two types of cognac glass you might have heard of are the snifter, or balloon shaped glass with a short stem, along with the long stemmed tulip shaped glass that is often the preferred choice of the cognac connoisseur.

Cognac Glasses - Do They Really Enhance the Drinking Experience?

The reasoning behind drinking neat cognac from a glass shaped such as these is that the glass allows the aroma (or nose) of the cognac to be captured inside and directed upwards towards the nose of the drinker. That way you not only involve your taste buds, but your sense of smell is also brought into play, so doubling the effect on your senses and so doubling your enjoyment of the drink. The tulip shaped glasses tend to have a slightly flared rim, allowing the heady aromas of the cognac a chance to breathe, so freeing the taste even more effectively. And today you can enjoy cognac from the most modern of glasses, with some of the world's top glass makers producing beautiful cognac glasses with a modern twist. This means that not only do you get the best cognac tasting experience, but that they also look pretty handsome sat on your dinner table as well.

One of the most popular Cognac Glasses is the Riedel Cognac und Brandy glasses - Riedel is one of the oldest family-run glass manufacturing companies in the world. Their beautiful crystal covers all drinks imaginable and their design is developed to suit the characteristic of every drink. Whether you're drinking wine, whiskey or cognac, Riedel will offer you a broad range of glasses to choose from. The tulip glass by Riedel for cognac is an elegantly shaped, heavy glass that makes drinking cognac even more enjoyable.

The Black Shiraz

Berton Vineyards are a family owned and run winery in the heart of the Riverina growing area in Australia. The team is small but very powerful and is fronted by Bob Berton the winemaker with his colleague Paul Bartholomeus. They have lovingly created a selection of fantastic wines which include The Black Shiraz, this is an espresso of a wine coming in at 15% alcohol. The great thing about this wine and its sister wine, The Head Over Heels Black Shiraz, is that although high in alcohol, it does not give you the usual alcohol burn that is often associated with high strength Shiraz wines.

Established by Bob & Cherie Berton in May 1996 with 75 acres. The heart of Berton Vineyards is their own personal plot in a sub-region of Eden Valley in South Australia. This idyllic property sits at 450m above sea level on gently rolling hills - except for the Chardonnay block which is anything but gentle!!

The first vines were planted in that spring - ten acres of Shiraz and seven acres of Chardonnay - but without any permanent water. It was not until 1998, after the new dam was filled, that the vines finally had a decent drink!!!
With all this, the vines struggled through their impressionable years. Lots of love and attention, but the lack of water really retarded their growth, so much so that a Swedish friend jokingly told them that they had planted a bonsai vineyard....the name stuck and later became the name of their premium Shiraz. With the good rainfall in High Eden, the vines are in great condition these days, but they still remember the early days every time they open a bottle of the Bonsai.

The Black Shiraz

After the dam was full they were able to follow on and plant Cabernet Sauvignon and lastly some Sauvignon Blanc. The Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc are now growing happily amongst big white rocks on ancient podsolic soils - which really makes driving trellis posts interesting, but that's another story!!!!

THE BLACK SHIRAZ

Grapes: 100% Shiraz
Region: South Australia
Taste: Intense colour, huge palate and high in alcohol, it displays vanilla, ripe plums and black cherries on the nose. The palate shows intense berry and rich fruit cake characters underpinned by layers of coffee and toasty oak that carry through to a lovely soft finish. A big wine at a mere 14.5% alcohol!

Serve: The perfect choice for rich, spicy -especially peppery- dishes. Steak au poivre, full flavoured game casseroles, beef sausages and Chilli con Carne are all great food matches. Ethnic dishes such as Shami kebab, Szechuan beef and Teriyaki dishes all work well. Also perfect with strong cheeses or simply enjoy anytime!

Establishing the Law During the California Gold Rush

During the early days of the gold rush, the pioneer miners were forced to establish and form their own laws. Up in the mining camps there were no courts, and many of the soldiers who were sent to keep the peace in California in the earliest days after the US took possession of the land, simply deserted their ranks and headed for the gold fields to seek their fortune. A consideration of the simple processes and laws they established with the quick acting justice they distributed makes for an interesting contrast with the plodding, bloated, political and exorbitantly expensive justice system we operate today.

The mining laws of the California gold fields, as was the case in all the various diggings throughout the mining region, were made at official group meetings of the miners held for that specific purpose. Because of this the requirements did vary significantly from district to district. Unlike so many modern laws, they were not designed by hungry lawyers seeking to pad their wallets, and were generally very few and simple. These basic standards defined how many feet of ground one man was entitled to hold in a ravine how much up on the bank, and in the bed of the creek; how many of these claims he could hold at a time; and how long he could absent himself from his claim without forfeiting it. This was the case because a man was expected to work his claim each day. If he left the area permanently, his claims were considered abandoned. In many areas, a digging tool like a pick, left in the hole was all that was necessary to secure ones spot against other claimants. The rules also declared what was necessary to be done in taking up and securing a claim which, for want of water, or from any other cause, could not be worked at the time. They also provided for various special contingencies incidental to the peculiar nature of those diggings. Each miner had one vote and acted as his own legislator. It was a plain and simple democracy unequalled since the days of the Athenian Greeks.

Of course, like all laws and regulations, at times they required some revision and amendment, to suit the progress and changes of the times. In those cases, any necessary meetings were held on certain Sunday afternoons specifically set aside for legislative purposes. The miners typically met in front of the general store, often reaching numbers of several hundred. The most respected man in the camp was generally selected to preside over the meeting. If a chair and table were handy they were used, but if there was a lack of the proper furniture, he might stand upon an empty pork-barrel or climb up into the back of a wagon, which gave him a commanding position looking down on the crowd. Another respected man with the necessary literary skills of reading and writing was appointed secretary, and he would place his writing materials on some flat surface alongside of the chairman. The chairman then, addressing the crowd, would then generally explain the object for which the meeting had been called. He would open the floor to hear any gentleman who had any remarks to offer on the topic at hand. Eventually someone would propose a specific amendment of the law relating to a certain description of claim, expressing the point in a very neat and specific speech. Once his motion was duly seconded, the chance was given for any opposition to make its case and provide further discussion. In time the matter was put to a vote. If the chairman declared the change carried by the ayes, the secretary would write it all down, and it became the law of that district. Normally two or three other acts were considered and voted upon, and when the business was concluded, a vote of thanks to the chairman was passed for his supervision of the meeting. The meeting was then officially declared to be dissolved, and the crowd accordingly dribbled into the nearest bar, where the legislators, in small detachments, pledged success to each other with whiskey as fast as the storekeeper could pour the drinks. While the legislature was in session, however, everything was conducted with a serious demeanor and the utmost formality.

Establishing the Law During the California Gold Rush

When the miners could not come to any settlement of some dispute among themselves, they would leave the decision to a jury of miners. When a miner's court was to be held, a formal notice was accordingly sent to all the prospectors within two or three miles up and down the creek, requesting them to assemble at the claim in question on a certain afternoon. Although a miner calculates an hour lost as so much money out of his pocket, it was common that most of the residents would turn out as they were all interested in supporting the laws of the region. The two opposing parties then, having tossed up a coin for the first pick, would choose a number of jurymen each from the assembled crowd.

Then the jury would normally sit themselves all together in an exalted position on a heap of stones and dirt (as was common on the claims from the normal operations of digging). One of the plaintiffs, who had been chosen as spokesman for his party, would then make a speech, calling several witnesses to prove his statements, and citing the recognized laws of the diggings in support of his claims. The defendants would follow in the same manner, making the most of their version of the case. During this time, the general public, sitting in groups on the different heaps of stones piled up between the holes with which the ground was honeycombed, would smoke their pipes and watch the proceedings. After the plaintiff and defendant had each had their turn to say all they had to say about the matter, the miner's jury would examine the state of the ground which was in dispute. They would then call some more witnesses to give further information, which is much different from our modern procedures in which a jury may ask no questions. Once all the information was considered, those pioneers would put their shaggy heads together for a few minutes, and pronounce their decision.

It is hard to fault the simple wisdom and straightforward justice of the pioneer miners. Their methods established a fair, democratic and just way of handling the law without the formality, expense and endless delays of the systems that we have now. In time, the normal trappings of civilization came to the hills and the prospector's laws were done away with. I am not so sure that the changes which came with "civilization" were any kind of an improvement.

The Dangers of Drinking Every Day

Studies have shown that drinking red wine can be beneficial for an individual's health. These health benefits come from an antioxidant called resveratrol that comes from the skin of red grapes. Antioxidants like resveratrol are believed to promote good health, can have anti-aging effects, and help build a healthy heart. However, that is not all red wine is believed to do for personal health. Some scientists believe it also reduces personal risk for ovarian cancer, stroke and kidney stones and can also reduce the risk for heart disease because it contains an element that helps reduce the amount of LDL cholesterol that your body produces. Some studies point to the country of France as a good example - wine is very popular there and the country also has a low incidence of heart attacks.

Further, new research is also suggesting that white wine may be beneficial to individual health. Consuming red and/or white wines has now been linked to increased life expectancy - in some cases by as much as 5 years. These studies have only linked wine to these health benefits, however. There is no research to suggest that drinking beer or hard alcohol on a regular basis can be beneficial to personal health.

When incorporated with a balanced and healthy diet, drinking wine in moderation will benefit your health. They key word there is moderation. Most men should limit themselves to no more than two glasses of wine every day and women should stop after one glass. (a glass of wine is defined as about 5 ounces). Notice how this is not an "average" of one to two glasses a day. Do not think you can drink 10 glasses of wine in one day and avoid it for the rest of the week and have everything even out over time. That is not how it works. The health benefits are eliminated if and when you consume more than you should.

The Dangers of Drinking Every Day

You should also try to remain alcohol free for a few days every week. Drinking occasionally, in moderation, might be "good" for you, but you should avoid drinking every day "for the sake of your health." This can lead to other dangers, such as alcoholism, and can create problems with drinking and driving, which is never a good idea.

Also be aware that a regular drink or two can become a problem. The people that stagger out of bars and stumble home every night are not the only ones with drinking problems. While having a drink or two in the evenings can be good for your health, you also need to be sure that you do not overdo things. Drinking every night, even in moderation, can create dependency problems in some people and can lead to more alcohol consumption (more than 1 or 2 drinks) very easily. Being intoxicated can lead to things like drunk driving, DUI arrests, and other problems that may lead to a need for a DUI lawyer. Additionally, be aware that you can be arrested for driving while impaired in some places, even if you are under the legal limit, which also requires a DUI attorney for assistance with the case. So, if you do decide to take advantage of the health benefits that can be obtained from drinking red and white wine, make sure you do so responsible.

All About Vodka Brands

Like everything else in life, we want to know which is the 'best' vodka. Which vodka is most superior to others. And like everything else in life, we realize that there is no one single answer. For example, I use the latest Intel Pentium Core Duo Processor, as I require it to power my media center, on the other hand, my Grandfather still uses a 11 year old IBM Thinkpad with 4 MB RAM running Windows 3.11 with Wordpad!

Anyway, back to Vodka. Vodka is defined as a neutral spirit devoid of any distinct characteristics such as odour, taste or colour. Considering the above definition all vodkas should be the same and the brand shouldn't matter. This is true to some extent, in the sense, that the final product of all the brands are more or less similar to each other and while mixed in a blood mary, there is little or no discernable distinction between them. However, if you plan to have them as shots, on the rocks or in a martini, then you are well advised to consume a premium brand.

There are a lot of vodkas out there. And each one is trying to catch your eye, with refreshing marketing, stylish bottles and happening events. This is because of the above noted fact, that the product is more or less same, and hence, marketing plays a big role.

All About Vodka Brands

Okay. Now since we are clear about what vodka actually is, lets look at some of the brands. (If you are interested more about the history and other nuances of Vodka, read my article 'All About Vodka') I am not affiliated with any of them and I have no particular favourite among them either. So be assured that whatever is said herein is completely unbiased and in the best interest of vodka.

Lets start with the world best selling vodka. Remember, the phrase is 'best selling', it doesn't make the best vodka on the planet. I guess every vodka drinker knows it. Smirnoff. Smirnoff was the first American brand of Vodka, which was bought over from Vladimir Smirnov of Russia. The Smirnoff No. 21 is the most widely sold vodka in the world and is an extremely good example of classical vodka. It has little discerning character, and does not pamper you with slight flavours or a mellow follow through. If you don't like to think too much and are on a budget, this is the vodka to go for. Have it chilled and experience the Russian in you. Smirnoff also comes in blue and black labels which are of increasing strength. It has also launched numerous flavoured vodkas such as Green Apple Twist, Citrus Twist, Lemon Twist and many more. They are great to have in martinis and light cocktails.

Next up, Grey Groose. Now this is on that has had its fair share of Hollywood exposure. You can hear almost every celebrity asking for a Grey Goose Martini. This vodka brand is truly a marketing brilliance. Winter wheat being distilled with natural spring waters in a French Distillery is surely going to make some heads turn. It is this approach to vodka, that has made Grey Goose a brand to reckon with. But, nothing to be taken away, this is really great vodka to have in your martini. It comes in three flavours: L'Orange, Le Citron and La Vanille. The Citron is great to have in a Lemon Drop Martini.

The third among the most marketed brands is Absolut. This Swedish vodka has the one of the largest number of flavoured vodkas in the market. Its global marketing strategy seems to have paid off in recent times and is considered to be a truly superior vodka in many places in the world. Its neutral variety comes in blue and red labels with increasing strengths. The red bottle (50 % vol) is a really smooth spirit with almost no discernarable taste of its own. The blue bottle mixes extremely well with almost all mixers and makes it great in most cocktails. The flavoured varieties too are very good and for the adventurous there are no dearth of varieties to try from.

Now, lets move onto the lesser marketed, premium brands. I'll start with what most vodka drinkers and experts consider a truly great and 'almost perfect' vodka. Stolichnaya is what it claims to be "a true Russian vodka". It was founded at the Cristill Distillery in Moscow and is now manufactured in ex-Soviet republics (Kazakhstan and Ukraine). It is quadruple distilled though quartz sand and finally passed through a woven cloth, to give you a vodka free from any flavours or odours. This one is great to have on the rocks.

Next on the list is Belvedere. This is a Polish vodka. However, unlike other Polish vodka this one is made from rye rather than potatoes. The experts are always confused about this one. Many hold it in high regard, while others suggest that the other brands mentioned here, are far superior. For the record, I like it. Still one could argue that with so many different brands with better marketing and “brand appeal”, this vodka still leaves you with something to desire more from.

Our last entry on this discussion would be Belvedere's sibling: Chopin. However, unlike its sibling, Chopin is made from potatoes; the way authentic polish vodka should. Even though for many years, potato based vodkas have been frowned upon by Russians as inferior, the truth lies in the fact, that with the right distillery, whatever be the ingredient, you can produce superior vodka. And Chopin is a great example of the same. This vodka is crisp and has a sweet and sour green apple tinge to it. It's the only potato based vodka that is held with such high regard and just for this sake, I urge you to try it at least once. Your Polish experience will definitely be worth it.

There are some other lovely vodka brands as well. Vox, Ketel One, Three Olives and Jewel Of Russia are just a few to name. Vodka, like other spirits, is full of tradition and variety. And to cover all would be an arduous if not impossible task. I hope not to offend anybody with my views. They are mine and others may not agree. As I always maintain wines and spirits are very personal in nature. The best wine or spirit is always the one you enjoy most! With that I humbly conclude this article. Hope you enjoyed it, as much as I need writing it.

The Health Advantages of Drinking Wine

One of the questions asked most frequently by my patients is whether wine is good for them. There is much controversy surrounding this subject lately and this is why. While research supports the benefits of drinking wine, particularly red, it also points out that heavy drinking will conversely be detrimental.

So when I am asked that question I explain that wine can be good for you in moderation and as part of an overall healthy diet. In other words the amount of wine you drink matters tremendously. If you drink more than what's recommended, your health benefits are lost and your health risks go up.

Here's what's considered safe and effective:

The Health Advantages of Drinking Wine

Men: No more than two drinks per day. Women: No more than one drink per day. One drink is defined as a 5-ounce glass of red or white wine. And no you cannot save up the one or two drinks per day and have them all on the weekend!

Why all the curiosity about wine's health benefits in the first place? The intrigue started in the 90's when baffled researchers launched a study of French people, trying to determine why they were not suffering from more heart attacks with diets so high in cheese fats.

The findings showed that it was due to their moderate and steady intake of wine. Long after this discovery, a bevy of research continued to support drinking wine for good health. The first studies show great health benefits from the healing powers of resveratrol, an antioxidant found in red grape skins and therefore in red wine. But now they're also finding just as many benefits from white wines.

All kinds of new findings are cropping up on a daily basis. Take a look at some of the most recent studies that boast the health advantages of wine:

Overall Health Benefits:

Anti-aging effects in red grape skins (Harvard Medical School in Boston, 2004) Reduced risk of death from nearly all causes: According to studies from France, UK, Finland and Denmark, moderate consumption of wine is more beneficial than that of beer or spirits. Kidney stones: Red wine intake reduces the risk of kidney stone formation. Cancer cells killed by protein in red grape skins (University of Virginia Health System, 2004)

Heart Health Benefits:

Scientists believe the red wine reduces the risk of coronary heart disease by reducing production of low density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol and boosting high density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol. Coronary heart disease reduced (University of California, Davis, 1995) Arteries kept clean by polyphenols in red grape skins (William Harvey Research Institute, 2002) Atherosclerosis: Red wine may prevent the initiation and progression of atherosclerosis (hardening or "furring" of the arteries). Both the alcohol and polyphenols in the red wine appear to favorably maintain healthy blood vessels by promoting the formation of nitric oxide (NO), the key chemical relaxing factor that plays an important role in the regulation of vascular tone.

Women's Health Benefits:

Decreased ovarian cancer risk (The Queensland Institute of Medical Research in Australia, 2004) Stronger bones (Twin Research and Genetic Epidemiology Unit, St. Thomas' Hospital in London, 2004) Lower risk of stroke (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2001)

Men's Health Benefits:

Lower risk of heart attack for men with high blood pressure (Worcester Medical Center in Massachusetts, 2004) Hypertension: There is some evidence of favorable effects of red wine on blood pressure. Two glasses of red wine (250 ml); taken together with the meal, lower post-meal blood pressure in hypertensive perrsons.

It's great to discover that something you enjoy could actually be healthy. However, I do not recommend that my patients over indulge just because the news is good. A word of caution worth repeating; overdoing anything is a recipe for disaster and can lead to even bigger health issues". That said, go ahead and enjoy your glass of wine tonight knowing that it is a healthy choice of beverage!

Christians Drinking Alcohol? What Scripture Has To Say

Tea-totaling Texans? Them's fightin' words!

I live in a small Texas town which is probably not all that different
from a small town anywhere else. At one time, as the town was growing,
much was being reported by the local media and debated at city council
meetings regarding liquor licensing. Whenever these types of issues are
discussed, some self-appointed Christian representatives will speak up,
supposedly on behalf of all the rest of us, and heatedly expound upon the
awful vice of drinking alcohol and what a demon-magnet that can be.

I recently said to a young lady who told me her church didn't allow
her to go anywhere where drinking took place, "You'd better leave
the state of Texas...and stop attending professional baseball games
while you're at it." I may as well have said, "Mother Teresa, you'd
better leave Calcutta! There are lepers all over the place!" If the light
of the world (you and me, according to Jesus) leaves the darkness, the
darkness remains dark. My question to Christians everywhere,
whenever we're confronted with a "sinful" act or attitude that we don't
appreciate, is this: "When is the right time for casting that stone?"

Christians Drinking Alcohol? What Scripture Has To Say

THE TRUTH HURTS. KNOWING IT WILL SET US FREE

Several years ago, a downcast young lady approached me at my secular
job, asking if I'd officiate her wedding. It seems that she and her mate -
apparently her husband - let it leak that they'd never had a traditional
wedding and had been cohabitating for about 2 years. They had a nice
home, all debts were combined, and they held good jobs. In their eyes,
they were married and moving along as a couple, facing the business
of life. One night, the couple received a surprise visit from their church
leaders, were reprimanded and told they should stop "shacking up."

Now, before we go any further, I'm not condoning that couples should
live with each other outside of wedlock, nor am I condemning those
who do. It is NOT recommended because, statistically, those who DO
live together before marriage have a much higher incidence of divorce
(let's forget the fact that 50% of all Christian marriages are ending in
divorce anyway AND that, in anonymous surveys, nearly 50% of
Christians admit to having had premarital sex).

Question for these church leaders: Before we point another accusing
finger at a Christian couple, can we talk about YOUR sins? Doubt,
unbelief, overeating, rage, criticism, gossip, plus the fact that nearly
half of all ministers surveyed admit to viewing porn regularly not to
mention substance abuses and adultery...all are equal in the eyes of
God and required the sending of His only begotten Son to become
our Savior.

Incidentally, I agreed to take this couple through 6 weeks of pre-marital
counseling and officiated their lovely wedding. Later, they had a baby
together. They have since moved on to become part of a different
congregation. That was 4 years ago and they're doing great.

You see, we can cast stones at those who drink alcohol - or those who
do anything else that "WE" might consider to be wrong - all we want to.
Who will be brow-beating us as we stuff our chubby cheeks? Who will
judge us using the same measure with which they are judged themselves?

The standard is Jesus, friends. Not the unholy trinity of Me, Myself and I.

WHAT THE GOOD BOOK SAYS

I contend that we should funnel everything through Scripture, preferably,
through the teachings of Christ, allowing the many verses on a
particular subject to define the one proof text, instead of requiring the
one proof text to trump the many. Personally, I can't help but believe
that all the oats, hops, barley and other grains used to produce alcohol
could be put to better use feeding the hungry of planet earth. I wish it
were. Maybe that will take place on the day that all swords will be
beaten into plow sheers.

Speaking of beatings, when we focus upon wine, the fruit of the vine
takes a severe thrashing itself within Christian circles, everyone trying
to justify their viewpoint. In the Old Testament, God's Law allowed
yayin (wine) and shekar (strong drink) to be purchased with the Tithe
of Rejoicing and to be drunk before the Lord. "You shall spend that
money for whatever your heart desires: for oxen or sheep, for wine or
strong drink, for whatever your heart desires; you shall eat there before
the LORD your God, and you shall rejoice, you and your household,"
(Deut. 14:26).

In the New Testament, all recorded prohibitions to drinking wine seem
to refer to either (A) immoderate consumption or (B) to abusers: "Be not
drunk with wine" (Eph. 5:18). "Do not be with heavy drinkers"
(Prov. 23:20). "Do not be addicted to wine" (I Tim. 3:8; Tit.2:3).
"Do not linger long over wine" (Prov. 23:30).

Some say, "But we love the sinners and hate the sin." Sadly, even when
this is true, it doesn't come across that way and, after all, perception is
reality. Besides, where is it written that drinking is a sin? Now, I
haven't had a beer since I was 19 when I drank six straight after working
at a construction site in El Paso. That doesn't make me any better than
anybody else; my convictions are just that: mine.

Wine? My Italian family sipped it often but never to excess and its been
about 10 years since I had a glass of Chianti with my spaghetti. Still, I
don't expect my convictions to be anyone else's. When I'm sick, I don't
care if the Apostle Paul DID instruct Timothy (1 Tim 5:23) to, "Stop
drinking only water, and use a little wine because of your stomach and
your frequent illnesses."

Sorry, Paul, but I'll take Pepto-Bismal, thank you. That's my choice.

Seriously, when all is said and done, I can't help but feel that we
Christians must distinguish the use of these beverages from their abuse.
Sometimes in Scripture, gluttonous eating is paralleled with immoderate
drinking of wine (Deut. 21:20; Prov. 23:21). But we can find nowhere
in the Bible where eating food is prohibited, thank you, Jesus!

At other times in Scripture, sexual perversion is paralleled with
drunkenness (Rom 13:13; I Pet 4:3). Yet, if ALL sexual activity were
condemned, well...you and I wouldn't be here.

Wealth often becomes a snare to many as well (I Tim. 6:9-11), but the
Scriptures do not make a blanket decree against its pursuit (Job 42:10-17).
Let's see a Word of Faith evangelist preach AGAINST the acquisition of
money! That will be a cold day on Padre island. Bottom line is that each of
these factors in life is intended by God to be a blessing for us, when used
according to the ways that HE intended.

LOVE ONE ANOTHER: JESUS WOULD DRINK TO THAT!

To the surprise of many, it would seem abundantly clear that the
Scriptures DO allow for the moderate partaking of alcoholic beverages -
wine, beer, bourbon or whiskey. By the way, I've had many friends in
ministry who hail from England and Germany. I love watching my
American Christian friends as they "get their knickers in a twist" when
these awesome European Christians visit the states and order a brew
with their Tex-Mex or wine with their poultry. The Scriptures pull no
punches in commending wine, nor do they reflect any embarrassment
when illustrating stories that involve its consumption in Biblical days.
Wine is set before the saints as blessing and gladness (Deut 14:26;
Ps.104:14-15), even though it may be, to the immoderate and wicked,
a mocker and curse (Prov. 20:1; 23:29). It would seem to me that all
the self-righteous finger-pointing we engage ourselves in today does
very little in the way of making the non-Christian jealous for what we
say we've found in Christ, the One who turned the water into wine, His
first miracle. Despite all the sincerity of well-meaning Christians
regarding this issue, every time we point a finger, there are four more
pointed right back at us. These fingers are those of the Spirit in operation -
the Spirit of the Pharisees.

The Great Commission, set forth by the Greatest Teacher, Jesus Christ,
was to go and make disciples. As followers of Christ, are we teaching
those who are watching us to condemn and even detest those who are

not like us, or are we teaching them to love everybody without condition,
planting all the seeds of grace necessary to make our faith attractive
enough so that they will want run to Jesus at their own proper moment
of harvest?

After all, He loves ALL of us, despite the deplorable things we harbor
deep within the dark recesses of our hearts.

In fact, He loved us to DEATH!

Every blessing!

Celiac Disease - What Can I Eat?

People suffering from celiac disease or even those who suspect they have the condition can greatly benefit from following a diet free from gluten. Sticking to a gluten-free diet can also be done by those who have dermatitis herpetiformis which is a skin problem related to sensitivity to gluten.

Gluten is a protein component present in certain cereals most especially wheat, rye and barley. A particular component of gluten called gliadin is the main cause of celiac disease. It is to be understood, though, that while avoiding wheat in the diet is advisable, it won't necessarily cut gluten in your diet. The reason is that gluten is not solely limited to cereals because this protein component can be found in other foods, too.

The best way to stay away from gluten then is to do your research. If you're positive of celiac disease or gluten allergy, being knowledgeable of the safe and unsafe foods can go a long way in improving your health. Doing your homework on the internet is a good start. There are numerous websites that cater to gluten-free diets and foods and those that provide detailed information on celiac disease and its symptoms.

Celiac Disease - What Can I Eat?

Having the disorder shouldn't discourage you to limit your intake of your favorite foods. What's important is you avoid using ingredients and foods that contain gluten to be able to enjoy life. There's no reason that you can't prepare your usual recipes just as long as you're careful with what you use.

If you're fond of sauces in your food, make sure to use gluten-free flour and not the wheat flour. Soy sauce and readily available sauces in packs, stock cubes and soups should be avoided at all cost. To season your food, you can still use salt, pepper, vinegar, herbs and spices, tamari and yeast.

Fresh fruits and vegetables should not be absent in your daily diet. They're rich in nutrients to keep your body strong and healthy. You can even choose to stick to a vegetarian diet if you wish just to be on the safe side.

Don't forget your dose of proteins which are the important building blocks of the body. These are found in fish, seafood, meat, poultry, eggs and dairy products. Include nuts and seeds, soy products and cereals that don't have gluten. Protein is especially vital to growing children but be sure to consult with a dietitian on what foods are best for kids who have celiac disease.

For cereals, cakes and pastries, it's best to use corn, tapioca, soy bran, rice, buckwheat, custard and arrowroot. Other grains suitable for a gluten-free diet are millet, lupine, quinoa, sorghum and montina. To satisfy your sweet tooth, it's safe to use jam, marmalade, sugar, honey, molasses, golden syrup and certain brands of chocolate.

Did you know that you still enjoy your favorite alcoholic drinks to go with your meals? Yes, that's right. Gin, whiskey and wine are okay. Just avoid beer, root beer and ale.

Remember that eating the right foods is your best bet towards improving your health. Follow a gluten-free diet and you have a good chance of lowering your risk for complications associated with celiac disease.

Bi-Polar Disorder

Bipolar disorder is a very complex disease to many people, including medical doctors, and rightly so. As with every other disease in allopathic medicine, there will never be a cure for bipolar disorder. You can't solely treat this disorder from the physical, and especially with harmful, man-made pharmaceutical drugs. Plus, Western medical doctors admit that they don't know the cause of this disorder.

All disease and disorder first occur on the energy level before manifesting physically. Therefore, healing of all diseases must occur first on the energy level, the root or causative level. This is why no cure or healing of bipolar disorder will ever occur in Western medicine because Western medicine does not deal with energy or vibration, and the human body has an energy or vibratory body. Western medicine does not even deal with the cellular level of healing, which follows the energy level of healing.

In order to address a problem (disease, sickness) we must first know what it is. You can only begin the healing process when you first "know" what a thing is. Every disease has an origin in which etiology teaches us can be studied.

Bi-Polar Disorder

Though an herbalist, my approach to healing and health is wholistic and encompasses all realms of human existential makeup, including the bio-magnetic sheath (human aura) or subtle bodies realm, i.e. ethereal body, mental body, astral body, etc.

The subtle bodies pertain to the layers of the bio-magnetic sheath (human aura) that relate to the physical, emotional, mental, astral, and spiritual levels of being. All living beings have an invisible but detectable energy field that surrounds them. This is true from man (human being) down to the animals and insects. This invisible energy field is known as the "bio-magnetic sheath" (aura). It can be detected and photographed with a certain kind of photography known as "Kirlian photography."

Okay, let's delve into the understanding of bipolar disorder so that we may properly understand it in order to properly address it and help those who are afflicted with it.

Bipolar disorder is medically defined as:

"A major mental disorder characterized by episodes of mania, depression, or mixed mood. One or the other phase may be predominant at any given time, one phase may appear alternately with the other, or elements of both phases may be present simultaneously. Characteristics of the manic phase are excessive emotional displays, such as excitement, elation, euphoria, or in some cases irritability accompanied by hyperactivity, boisterousness, impaired ability to concentrate, decreased need for sleep, and seemingly unbounded energy. In extreme mania, a sense of omnipotence and delusions or grandeur may occur. In the depressive state, marked apathy and under-activity are accompanied by feelings of profound sadness, loneliness, and lowered self-esteem. Causes of the disorder are multiple and complex, often involving biologic, psychological, interpersonal, and social and cultural factors. Mosby's Medical Dictionary, 5th edition (1998), pg. 196

Bipolar disorder is a depressive disorder. It is one of two major classifications of depressive disorders: (1) unipolar depression and (2) bipolar depression.

Bipolar disorder usually starts out as depression and slowly graduates to mania; and the depression and mania can involve alternating episodes, an up and down effect. Therefore, bipolar disorder is also known as manic depression.

In my traditional fashion, let's break matters down into pabulum so we can get a thorough and pellucid understanding of bipolar disorder.

The word or prefix "bi" means: "Two; twice: bipolar 2. Occurring twice during: biweekly [Latin: bis, bi - meaning "twice."] Hence, "bi" means two.

The word "polar" means: 1. Of, measured from. Or referred to a pole 2. Of or near the North or South Pole. 3. Occupying or characterized by opposite extremes.

The word "polar" derives from the word "pole" which means: "Either or two oppositely charged terminals, as in an electric cell or battery; either of two opposing forces. [Greek: polos, meaning "axis"]

The word "disorder" means: "A lack of order; confusion; an ailment."

From the above break down of the term "bipolar disorder", we come up with "a lack of order or an ailment of two poles of opposing forces or extremes (or mental states)."

Basically, bipolar disorder deals with a fluctuation of extremes on the emotional level - depression and mania. Depression deals with a saddened state whereas mania deals with an excited or enthused state.

Depression. noun. 1. The act of depressing or condition of being depressed. 2. A sunken area; hollow 3. The condition of feeling sad or despondent. 4. Pschol. A condition marked by an inability to concentrate, insomnia, and feelings of dejection and hopelessness. American Heritage Dictionary supra, pg. 235

Depression. [Latin: "deprimere" meaning "to press down]. 3. A mood disturbance characterized by feelings of sadness, despair, and discouragement resulting from and normally proportioned to some personal loss or tragedy. 4. An abnormal emotional state characterized by exaggerated feelings of sadness, melancholy, dejection, worthlessness, emptiness, and hoplessness that are inappropriate and out of proportion to reality. The condition is neurotic when the precipitating cause is an intra-psychic conflict or a traumatic situation or event that is identifiable, even though the person is unable to explain the overreaction to it. The condition is psychotic when there is severe there is severe physical and mental functional impairment because of some unidentifiable intra-pyschic conflict; it is often accommodated by hallucinations, delusions, and confusion concerning time, place, and identity. Mosby's Medical Dictionary, 4th edition, supra pg. 354

Mania. noun. An intensively intense enthusiasm or desire; craze. 2. A mental disorder characterized by excessive physical activity and emotional excitement. 3. Violent abnormal behavior.

From the word "mania" we get the word "maniac" which means: One with an excessive enthusiasm for something. [Greek: maniakos, meaning "mad", mania, meaning "madness.].

We also get the word" manic" which means: "Of, affected by, or marked by mania."

Are you starting to really understand the depth of the rock group, The Bangles, hit song "Manic Monday" now from all of the definitions supra? I am!

Monday is the day of the week that is named in honor of the moon; hence Monday is a corruption of Moon's Day. America may profess to be a Christian nation, but if you have eyes to see, you will and can see that paganism's mark has been left on Christianity and America, which purports to be a Christian nation. Not a Christ-like nation, but a Christian nation. There's a difference!

Monday has always been associated with emotional imbalance, lunacy, mania, and sorrow ("the blues") to be exact. In fact, the Latin word for "moon" is "luna" from whence we get the words "lunacy" and "lunatic." Originally, lunacy was attributed to the moon.

In chromatherapy, the color blue deals with soothing and calming and this color blue (especially light blue) helps us to relax and to calm down. This is very true! So if you have an irate and/or anxious or hyperactive child(ren), you might want to consider painting their bedroom light blue so as to positively impact them with this color's frequency or vibration.

The color blue is the antidote for the color red, which deals with passion, fever, and fieriness. If you are upset or angry, your aura becomes a tainted and unhealthy red color because on an energetic level you are on fire (burning up), and you begin to emit the frequency of this color, and in accordance pursuant to the law of attraction, as long as your frequency is the frequency of this color (tainted or dark red), you will attract other things into your orb or aura that matches this same frequency. You will attract people, circumstances, situations, and events that will keep you angry and upset and make you more angry and upset. This is true because all energy is cyclical and that which is cyclical is bound to come back around. Karma is cyclical energy coming back around to its source. So to help yourself calm down when you are angry or upset, have a room with blue (light or sky blue) walls that you can go into for a few minutes and just stare at the walls so as to "cool" down.

Actually, staring or looking at anything blue or light/sky blue will get the job done. And if nothing blue or light/sky blue is around, simply close your eyes and visualize this color for a few minutes. It really works! The technique is greatly intensified when deep breathing is added to it. Whatever the source or cause of the anger, simply get a picture of it in your mind, imagine it disintegrating or turning into dark gray smoke and continue to blow the smoke out via your lips (perform 10-20 deep breaths); then imagine the dark gray smoke all gone from your mind.

With each breath you release the cause or source of your anger. After the last breath, you simply say: "I have released" (this anger, situation, etc.). And because you don't want that negative energy to be lingering out in the Universe so as to be available to someone else, simply transmute it into positive energy with deliberate intent and you can do this by either imaging or vocalizing (via imaging see the dark gray smoke convert into a pure white or sparkling crystalline colored smoke or via vocalization say: "the negative energy I just released is hereby converted in positive energy and made available for positive use throughout the Universe - So be it!').

Okay, getting back to our subject at hand, because blue (light/sky blue) is the color frequency of the Fifth chakra (Vissudha), visualizing or looking at the color blue will help to balance (open) this chakra - the seat of communication, which pertains to higher creativity and self-expression, thus allowing you to express yourself (and truthfully and honestly).

We do express ourselves better when we are "cool" (cool-headed), calm, and relaxed. The color blue (and light/sky blue) has this profound and healing effect on us, all of us, whether we believe in chakras and/or chromatherapy or not.

Now while the color blue deals with being cool, calm, and relaxed, the color also has an opposite polarity effect - depression or melancholy, hence a feeling of "the blues" which I'm sure African-Americans can relate to, at least better than anybody else or any other so-called race (since today, the majority of Americans regardless of race are catching and singing "the blues" today due to the state of our union [government, society] and our personal unions with self (inner and outer) and other people).

From my personal research I have discovered that depression and melancholy affect the liver organ and vice versa. The psycho-emotional aspect of the liver corresponds to the negative emotion of anger; thus anger (and madness) stores in the liver (the tissues of the liver).

It is the consumption of alcohol (spirits) that releases the evil spirits of anger and madness that are stored in the liver in the person who consumes alcohol. It is very common for drunk or inebriated people to become very upset, angry, or mad shortly after reaching this imbalanced state. This is because the alcohol serves as an instigator for the release of these stored negative emotions that the drunkard or drunk person has been carrying for some time (perhaps dating back to childhood or the teenage years).

Because alcohol is an intoxicant (a toxic substance; a pollutant of the blood and thus the body), it not only pollutes on the physical level, but also pollutes on the subtle body level. The aura becomes a dirty dark red color, in addition, little portals (gateways) open up within the aura which allows negative or dark spirits (ethereal beings) to enter the person's energy body and thus take the person under their control, mainly on the mental, emotional, and spiritual level. This is why the Ruler's imps (government) say that you are "under the influence" of alcohol when you are drunk. It's not the alcohol that influences your mind, as alcohol taints the blood, as it is a poison. It is the dark spirits (ethereal beings) that influence the mind. Liquor stores appropriately sell alcohol in the section called "Spirits."

Popping the top of a bottle of alcohol allows certain spirits (genie) to come out, like in the story of Aladdin, except the spirit (genie) here in this situation is not benevolent.

In Islam, we discover that genies (called "Jinn") are either malevolent or benevolent. The Universe is filled with dark and light beings or entities and both or on the scene right now though you can't see them as they are invisible, but nevertheless they are there on a different frequency that if you tuned in to that particular frequency right now you would see them. The evil spirits are lingering around us waiting for us to get into a fight or confrontation, to become angry and vexed, to have lower chakra sex, to drink alcohol and become drunk; and to consume drugs and fade out of our minds. They love these types of activities as it feed their appetites. It also makes it easier for them to invade our energy field because these activities lower our vibration. Lower activity lowers your aura and drinking alcohol to the point of drunkenness is sure to do such!

Growing up in the hood of South Central Los Angeles, it was all too common to witness males and females getting bent (as we say in the hood, which means "drunk') and then minutes or hours later, being involved in some drama, usually a physical fist fight.

I witnessed this with my own parents almost every Thursday night. My father got paid every Thursday from his job and my parents had a ritual of first taking the whole family out to dinner (usually at Bob's Big Boy restaurant or Norm's restaurant near Century Boulevard and Vermont Avenue), then to my paternal grandmother's house, followed by the local V.I.P. record store (now defunct) to buy the latest musical albums (The Gap Band, Teena Marie, James Brown, Rick James, etc.), and lastly, to the corner liquor store for some spirits (alcohol) and cracklin' pork skins.

My parents would be getting along fine, just talking and laughing, eating fried pork skins (pork cracklins), and listening to music. I'd be in the bed and would feel like I'm in paradise due to the good music playing and sound of laughter from my parents. I was always happiest hearing, seeing, and knowing my parents were getting along and having a good time together. Nothing else surpassed this for me. Now of course, the worst times of my childhood was when they were at each other's throat like wild dogs.

Well, it wouldn't be too long after all that Thursday night partying, eating swine flesh, and drinking alcohol that my parents would be at each other's throat, and it would always be my mother who would start the madness. She was borderline alcoholic though she didn't drink every day. She drank often, mostly on weekends (which sort of began for us on Thursday), but not everyday.

My mother used to remind me of Sue Ellen Ewing from the hit television series, "Dallas", which just happens to be my all-time favorite television show (thanks to J.R. Ewing, played by actor Larry Hagman).

Sue Ellen would be just fine when she didn't drink, but once she started to drink, she was a mess, and that was my mother.

Alcohol always released anger in my mother. She would start up by cursing up a storm (usually in response to my father saying something about one of her family members or by just saying something that obviously pissed her off).

The next thing you know she'd be throwing things (ash trays, pots and pans, drinking glasses, the telephone, etc.) and knocking pictures down from the wall. The woman literally physically tore the house apart. Even as a little boy, I could always deduce that my mother only acted like that after she drank alcohol. This impressed upon me at a young age to never drink alcohol; and after sipping on a few of the wines and spirits in my parents' bar just to experience the taste of this stuff that negatively impacted my family, I never drank alcohol - NO wine, champagne, whiskey, rum, scotch, gin, etc. I stayed away from that junk because I saw how it made people react. I saw the harm that followed from drinking this crap.

It's funny how the government is always talking about regulating people for purposes of "public safety" (or public health and order) but will not ban alcohol, cigarettes, and pharmaceutical drugs which together kill two million people per year.

And now that I know why my mother used to become upset and angry after drinking alcohol, I am able to assist and help people heal on the energy level in general, the emotional level in particular.

Some people tell me: 'Oh Djehuty, one glass of wine won't hurt!" My retort is: "I'm sure one glass of dog piss wouldn't hurt either, but over time you'd have some serious health problems because the fact of the matter is, the stuff does not belong in your body."

Drinking alcohol taxes the liver while it tries to filter alcohol from the blood stream. Again, liquor adversely affects the liver.

Now let's look at the word "melancholy." Melancholy is defined as: "Sdaness; depression. 2. Pensive reflection. 1. Gloomy; sad [Greek "melancholia"]

But if we really want to find out the true meaning of the word "melancholy", we must deduce the word on our own.

"Melan" = black (as in melanin); and "choly" = bile (as in chologogue, a substance such as an herb that stimulates the flow of bile). Hence, melancholy refers to "black bile." But wait a minute! Bile is green in color! Yes it is, so what's going on here? Now we're getting somewhere in our understanding of things.

The word "melancholy" derives from the word "melancholia" which is defined as:

Melancholia. A mental disorder marked by severe depression and apathy
[Late Latin: MELANCHOLY.] American Heritage Dictionary, 4th edition, 2001, pg. 529

Melancholia. 1. Extreme sadness; melancholy. 2. Obsolete, the major affective depressive disorder. [Greek "melas", meaning 'black', + "chole", meaning 'bile'] See also BIPOLAR DISORDER; DEPRESSION. Mosby's Medical Dictionary, 3rd edition, 1990, pg. 738

Clearly, bipolar disorder, from a medical standpoint or point of view is a form of mental retardation coupled with depression.

The Causation of Bipolar Disorder

Bipolar disorder is a Seventh chakra (Sahasrara) imbalance, usually excessive chakra energy.

"The Seventh (or Crown) chakra is the place of Nirvana - freedom from opposites - and is considered to be the realm where the individual soul and the Universal Soul are One. This is the realm of the total union of Shiva and Shakti, of all opposites and conflicting tendencies within oneself and between self and the cosmos." Ashoki Bedi, M.D.

From my experience with people with bipolar disorder, all of them had a deep spiritual side, but unfortunately, it was disconnected from reality. Take Larry for example. Though bi-polaric, he was very spiritual but was greatly disconnected from reality because he believed he was Jesus Christ, the Messiah. Larry is Jewish (Caucasian Jew) but considered himself a Messianic Jew (a Jew who believes in and accepts Jesus as the Messiah).

Larry was generally a happy guy, especially when things were going his way and he had hundreds of thousands of dollars in the bank and could afford his limousines and pretty women. But whenever things didn't go his way or some type of stressful situation would arise, Larry would lose it. He would freak out! He would run to the bottle and get drunk and would be a complete mess.

"The condition is neurotic when the precipitating cause is an intra-psychic conflict or a traumatic situation or event that is identifiable." Mosby's supra.

Larry's bipolar disorder was neurotic and not psychotic at all, at least from my observations when working with him.

Larry had two stages that I noticed. First, everything would be okay and he would be taking his medication (pharmaceutical drugs). Secondly, after some traumatic situation would occur, he'd fall apart and run to the bottle.

While inebriated, he would be very angry and upset, usually at government. Though drunk, his discourses were always spiritual. It's strange because in his anger and inebriated state, he spoke a lot of spiritual truths, something a lot of "normal" drunk people don't do. They may speak truth while drunk (like my mother), but rarely is it spiritual truth.

Bipolar people that I have dealt with over the years have always acknowledged the spiritual. This is how I personally know bipolar disorder is partially a Seventh chakra imbalance because the Seventh Chakra is our spiritual center, our link to the Higher Self, our divine nature.

However, characteristics of the excessive Chakra energy individual include:

Constant sense of frustration

Unrealized power

Psychotic, depressed, or manic-depressive

Frequent migraine headaches

Destructive

Sexual expression

Sometimes passionate, sometimes distant

Joy Gardner-Gordon, in "Pocket Guide to the Chakras" gives us the following example of an excessive Seventh Chakra energy individual (which actually describes Larry to a T):

"This psychotic man imagines that he is Jesus Christ. He has delusions of grandeur as he attempts to enlist his twelve disciples. He actually does have the ability to see into the future and to read minds, but his skills are sporadic and undisciplined, and he cannot distinguish between his fantasies, or his paranoias, and reality." Pg. 100

Because the Seventh Chakra influences the brain, nervous system, pineal and pituitary glands, these glands and organs must be addressed when helping the bipolar disorder individual and you CANNOT help the bipolar patient or person with these glands and organs with man-made, chemical, pharmaceutical drugs.

Drugs only exacerbate the problem. The human body is not made of drugs so drugs don't do it any good. They only toxify and pollute the body. The body identifies everything that it cannot digest as a poison and seeks to expel it from the body. Therefore, only natural things and substances from the earth can be used to help assist the bipolar person or individual, e.g. herbs, essential oils, crystals, fruits and vegetables, etc.

Larry had nearly all of the characteristics of a person with excessive Seventh Chakra energy. Larry always had a constant sense of frustration, he had tremendous unrealized power, he was most certainly depressed and manic-depressive, he got frequent migraine headaches, and he was highly sexually expressive (he was a member of private sex club).

It is very true about bipolar disorder individuals that one day they'll be very happy, on top of the world, and the next day or a few days later, they'll be greatly depressed like the world is coming to an end.

We must also look at the karmic and past-life aspect of bipolar individuals.

Bipolar individuals are borderline genius and lunatic.

In addition to working on the brain, nervous system, and endocrine system (pituitary and pineal glands), the natural practitioner must work on the liver of the bipolar individual. The liver stores anger and bipolar individuals have a tendency to become very irate and out of nowhere and at a whim. For many people with mates who are bi-polar, this behavior can be quite frightening.

The natural healer or practitioner should also take into account the karmic aspect of bi-polar. Individuals in this present life dispensation who are experiencing bi-polar disorder chose their Earth vehicles replete with so-called anomalies and so-called defects so as to undergo certain experiences for attainment of certain life experiences for purposes of soul growth; in addition to the fact of paying past life (or lives) karmic debt.

People who experience brain disorders (such as bi-polar disorder) in this life are people who in past lives may have abused their brains, used their minds and/or knowledge for purposes of harm, manipulated the minds of other people, practiced mind control experiments; pulled the levers of guillotines (which cut people's heads off as a form of capital punishment), levied capital punishment against innocent persons, etc.

There are no victims in the Universe. We create our own realities and fates via past and present life thoughts, beliefs, and actions. This is why I do not feel sorry for anyone regardless of their condition, because I have spiritual understanding, over-standing, and inner-standing and I know that they played a role in creating and manifesting the condition, whatever it may be, whether it was in this lifetime or a previous lifetime. Justice (karma) permeates our Universe and no action goes unnoticed or unreturned. Again, there are no victims, just participants.

HEALING BI-POLAR DISORDER NATURALLY

HERBS. I recommend using nervine herbs for bi-polar disorder. These herbs include Kava Kava, Passionflower, Lavender flower, Jatamansi, Chamomile, St. Jon's Wort, Valerian Root, Blue Vervain, Hops, Scullcap, Catnip, and Cinnamon to name a few. These herbs can be taken in tea form, capsule form, or liquid extract form and can be taken throughout the day.

AROMATHERAPY. There are plenty of good essential oils that are effective in the treatment and healing of bi-polar disorder and they include Neroli, Bergamot, Lavender, Jasmine, Davana, May Chang, Blood Orange, Linden, Valerian, and Melissa (True). These oils can be inhaled, burned in a diffuser, and/or added to bath water.

CRYSTALS. There are plenty of crystals that can be used in the treatment and healing of bi-polar disorder, but by far, the best stone to use for bi-polar disorder is lepidolite. Lepidolite contains lithium.

Other good stones/crystals for bi-polar include Charoite, Larimar (Dolphin Stone), Sugilite, Amethyst, and Peridot.

The above crystals and stones are ideal for the depression aspect of bi-polar (and can be placed directly on the Ajna chakra located between the eyebrows).

However, for the grounding aspect of bi-polar, I recommend the following crystals and stones: Black Tourmaline, Onyx, Jet, Obsidian, Hematite, Smoky Quartz, and Magnetite. These stones can be placed anywhere from the bottom of the feet up to the genital region, or, around the body in a grid)

Crystals can be applied directly to the Sixth chakra (Brow Chakra) while lying down (for about 15-30 minutes) or can be made into an elixir (letting the crystal sit in water for a period of 24 hours, receiving both moon and sun light) and drank (a few dropper-fuls or 1-4 ounces).

Dherbs products that are helpful in cases of bi-polar disorder include: Full Body Detox, Brain Tuner (capsules, tea), CNS (Central Nervous System) formula, Anti-Depression elixir, Bi-polar-Aid elixir; Nerves formula, Anti-depressant inhaler; Anti-Anger elixir, and Nerves tea.

Dherbs services that can also help in cases of bi-polar disorder (for purposes of healing) include Chakra Alignment/Balancing and Hemisphere Synchronization Therapy.

Bio: Djehuty began to explore the world of natural health through herbs. He discovered that his bronchial asthma was merely a symptom of an excess of acidic fluids in his body. Djehuty decided to experiment by combining two specific expectorant herbs, encapsulating his concoction and eating several capsules daily for two weeks. By the end of 1996, Djehuty had completely defeated his bronchial asthma and has never suffered a single symptom since.

"I Never Drink Water!" - So, Are You Dehydrated?

It's almost a matter of pride, isn't it? From the hard drinker to the tea swiller, from the coffee addict to the kola kid, 'water' is a dirty word.

Are humans really among those rare few mammals that need very little water to survive? After all, unlike desert creatures, we have no inbuilt water conservation mechanism. If you've read the early Dune sci-fi books, you'll have seen what might be done to get us that way -- the 'still suit' -- but it's hardly real. No, we're not built at all for low water intake.

So, why do so many of us think that we can get by on a couple of pints of liquid a day, and even drink it with diuretics like alcohol and the caffeine in cola, tea and coffee? I don't reckon we think about it. We just think about convenience. Going to pee is an inconvenient time-waster, so avoiding much fluid intake seems sensible. But there's a heavy price for saving those few minutes each day.

"I Never Drink Water!" - So, Are You Dehydrated?

If you're one of these low water intake people -- and there are so many -- you'll be amazed at how much more alert you get and how fast that 'sluggish' feeling goes when you begin to drink properly.  The doctors don't go banging on about it for no reason!

Our Miracle Poison Eliminators

One of the fastest ways to attract serious bodily breakdown is to stop the elimination of poisons. Our bodies are constantly making waste. It's part of the state of being alive. Feces is the obvious one; so is breathing (it dumps carbon dioxide); and sweating is another, disposing of salts and some other chemicals.

Urine is a major waste disposer, too. It's the end product of a complex chain of processes, which start with waste disposal from every cell in our bodies. Just by living and doing their job, all of our cells absorb nutrients and oxygen and dispose of wastes like lactic acid directly through the cell wall. Our blood and lymph systems drain this away for processing in the liver, and our kidneys extract the waste delivered from the liver, store it in the bladder and pump it out periodically. Fine, so far.

Water is Vital for health

The thing is, all these processes depend on an adequate water supply to work. Dehydrated cells can't excrete poisons properly. One result is muscular cramp. Another is a poor ability to think straight, as your brain malfunctions. Why? Low water in our blood and lymph systems is very dangerous, and your body will yank this water from almost anywhere else in your body to keep up the blood functions without which you'll soon die -- especially cleaning wastes from every cell in your body. And if, like most of us, you eat a high salt diet, your body needs even more available water to maintain the hydration balance between blood and cells. Or again, you die -- painfully.

Concentrated urine is an early symptom of dehydration, and it can cause all kinds of malfunctions including kidney and gall stones. Birds have a mechanism to suck out almost all urine's water, giving the familiar white missile on your head! But we have no such ability. When our urine concentrates too much, it's a sign of trouble.

A classic result of dehydration is those hallucinations (all those 'lost in the desert' stories) as your brain is deprived of water to keep the rest of you alive. Oh, and if you're dehydrated, you'll have digestive problems, too, principally constipation.

But we don't have to go too far down this road to be disadvantaged by dehydration. An early symptom is loss of concentration as the water is yanked from our brains to keep everything else going. That can be costly indeed. Migraine and headaches is another. So, if you want to avoid pain, or losing money by bad decisions or the risk of an accident, keep hydrating -- drink!

How Much Water Should I Drink?

It's simple to do: follow the well-known doctor's advice to drink seven glasses of water a day. You'll find that you get more alert, feel fresher and maybe those headaches and migraines you get under stress will magically disappear. And, of course, you'll need to pee more often -- but that's natural and healthy!

The water can be any drink with water in,that isn't a diuretic (see above). So, soup, milk, fruit juice, herbal teas, and so on, all count. Water in your meals doesn't unless they are very water-rich, and don't forget to count calories in these drinks as part of your food. It ain't my fault if you get fat! And drink steadily through the waking day -- not litres at a time!

Maybe you want more specific guidance? Here are three easy tips to help you drink the right amount of water:

TIP ONE: Calculating daily water needs

Calculate your optimum water intake using one of these rough-and-ready rules -- you'll only have to do it once.

  • In pounds, drink half an ounce of water daily per pound of your body weight. So, if you weigh 150 pounds, drink 150/2 = 75 ounces of water a day. That's just under 5 pints US, rather less than 4 pints Imperial.
  • In kilos, drink 3/100ths of your weight in water each day. So, if you weigh 70 kilos, drink 70 x 3/100 = 210/100 = 2.1 litres (same as kilos) of water each day -- just over 2 litres.

That may look like a lot of water, but it's not!  Most mammals voluntarily have a similar water intake.  It's only humans who stubbornly resist drinking just for short-term convenience and despite getting those natural 'thirsty' signals.  You'll see below how little it is each hour.

TIP TWO: Spotting Dehydration

First, look for a loss of concentration. If you've forgotten to drink in the last hour or two, then you've probably found the reason. But also keep a general watch over your urine concentration. Most people's urine is a deep yellow, and that's counted as normal. But most people are dehydrated! A simple motto is, PEE PALE. It's that easy. Apart from maybe the first time you go in the day, or if you're ill or eating something poisonous like whiskey and detoxifying rapidly, expect your urine to be a pale straw color. If it gets stronger, a definite deeper yellow, drink! It really is that simple. And yeah, you may have to peer into the bowl to check. Not really so gross, is it? I bet, if you're male, that you'll find yourself peering over into the next stall in public toilets -- just to check what color... Betcha!

TIP THREE: The Daily Balance

Your body is naturally good at keeping a water balance -- if it isn't as badly dehydrated as a lot of Westerners are. If you're a little dehydrated, your kidneys will allow less water containing a stronger concentration of wastes into your bladder -- that's where the brighter yellow pee comes from.

Suppose you don't pee, even when you're getting the signals that your bladder's full and you need to (a gripping, 3-hour movie? Watching a long race?) or suppose you're really dehydrated and short of water. Then your kidneys will stop processing waste -- and the poison level in your blood begins to rise. A lot of people are at that high poison level all of the time, and concentration and bodily processes like efficient digestion and waste removal from your cells begin to deteriorate.

If, at the other extreme, you have a lot of water in your blood, then your bladder fills up quickly. You should pee more often, and your pee will be very pale.

Within limits, then, you can cope with quite a wide difference in water intake without problems. But if you over- or under-hydrate seriously, you'll get pathological conditions.

You'll function best if you have a regular intake of water -- just the right amount each hour you're awake. So aim to drink your daily optimum of water evenly over the waking day.  (When you sleep, the system pretty-well shuts down anyway. That's why a tall glass of water is a good first action when you wake up.)

Suppose you're a fella of 130 Kg, 150lb, and your optimum is around three liters a day. If you're awake 16 hours a day, that's roughly 200ml (about 7 ounces) each hour, and one hour you eat a meal which is mostly water -- say, fruit or soup. If you're a svelte lady, and you need two liters a day, make it about 150ml an hour (about 5 ounces). Now, even if you're one of the dehydrated majority, that doesn't sound an impossible large amount to drink, does it?

If you find that you've become dehydrated, or you realize that you've forgotten to drink for several hours, drink an hour's worth right away, then another in 20 minutes to half an hour. That puts you back on track and your body will rebalance pretty rapidly. What you must not do is try to make up all of the missed fluid. You've already adapted to its loss, and to drink this much at once will over hydrate you.

Be Sensible about Managing Your Water Balance

These are pretty rough-and-ready figures in Tips 1 and 3, so don't get too rigid about it. (You might have noticed that the pounds and kilos conversions are not quite the same, but they're simple to work out.) If you drink double the amount shown, you are over-working your kidneys -- not a good thing. If you drink half, you're pretty dehydrated. Be sensible about it.

If you're drinking diuretics, you're forcing your kidneys to process more water than you should, so you'll pee too often. The result is that you have to drink more to stay hydrated. The most common diuretic drinks contain stimulants like caffeine and taurine, or alcohol, or maybe both! So anything strongly alcoholic, especially shorts, liqueurs and wine, will need water to balance it. So will tea, coffee, chocolate, colas and sports/energy drinks (Red Bull, for example) -- and the stronger they are, the more water you'll need to balance them. They all contain poisons and will cause a detox effect anyway, so judging the right balance isn't easy. Weakish tea or coffee, or most colas, won't need much water to balance out. Strong stuff like extra-strong tea, coffee shorts and taurine-kick sports drinks, might need more water than the drink itself to balance out. Italians don't drink water with their coffee shot for nothing!

One last point: if you're sweating freely, the rules are different. I'm thinking of extreme conditions, like being in a blood-temperature, humid environment or working hard in a very hot environment, or working super-hard anywhere. Examples are: long distance runners, cyclists and swimmers; underground coal miners; furnacemen; shot blasters in full remote air gear, sugar cane cutters. In these conditions, you can quickly excrete more water than your body can afford to lose. You may also lose too much salt, one of the few situations where you may get salt-deficient. The answer, just while the heavy sweating is happening, is to drink extra water to make back the sweat losses, with a pinch of salt added to each litre. No need for expensive specialist drinks -- if you need sugar for blood-sugar top-ups, use honey or a low acid fruit juice (eg, melon) in the water. There's no stimulant poison in the home brew and you know what you're getting!

Overall, your attitude to hydration should be simple: be sensible. Tip 2 is your common sense guide -- pee pale!

Happy drinking!
